In the run-up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, units of the GDSF was enlisted to help with the security, health and protocol elements of the Games. To have these troops separate from their command, an entire support troop unit was established until both the Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo was complete. The commander was presented a special standard, modeled off of the Brigade Commander flag, with the emblems of both games at the bottom fly. The text ""Ministry of Defense, Ground Self-Defense Force Eastern Army" (防衛省 陸上自衛隊 東部方面隊) was put below the emblem in black, close to the edge of the flag.(Source)
